Banana chiffon cake

Banana chiffon cake

Chiffon cakes are the best cakes.

They are, seriously.

They’re light, they’re fluffy, they’re not too sweet, and (unlike sponge cakes) I can actually bake them. They’re so lovely and have the nicest texture.

Appliances Online 8th Birthday: cake decorating class

DSC_7871

Disclosure: I attended the event courtesy of Appliances Online.

Why have cake that looks like a cake when you can have a cake that looks like a blender? How cool is this?

(Also, how many times can I say cake in a sentence? Cake cake cake cake cake.)

The other week I attended a cake decorating class at Let Them Eat Cake to help celebrate Appliances Online’s 8th birthday. You might be wondering what cake has to do with appliances – well, AO have launched a cake decorating competition to find their official birthday cake. Entrants have to create an appliance themed cake and can win one of eight Sunbeam food processors (see end of this post for details).

Do you want to see the process behind this blender cake? Of course you do. 😀

Hargreaves Hill Brewing Company

Beer paddle

There’s something nice about getting out of Melbourne for a drive and lunch – even if it’s only down to the Mornington Peninsula or to the Yarra Valley.

When you go with friends it’s even better: you can sing along to cheesy songs (stop right now, thank you very much / the vengabus is coming / we are titaniuuuuuuuuum) and do some llama llama llama! spotting.

A wee while ago, Shellie organised a group of us on a trip to the Yarra Valley with lunch at Hargreaves Hill Brewing Company. Hargreaves Hill is a micro brewery, and the restaurant is in a very attractive former National Bank building.

Kelly Bros

Kelly Bros

Disclosure: My month trial of weekly produce boxes was courtesy of Kelly Bros.

Last month, I woke up on Thursdays to a box of fruit and vegetables sitting by the front door, thanks to Kelly Bros. No hauling fruit and veg home from the market – it just showed up like magic for a month.

Kelly Bros are a family owned and managed business, who have been farming in Victoria for six generations (!). They farm, they harvest, and they deliver, with three options for home delivered fruit and vegie boxes.

A small box (that I received) is $28 and is good for 1-2 people, weighing about 6-7kg.

A medium box costs $38, suits 3 people or small families, weighing about 10-12kg.

The last and largest box is $45, weighs about 12-15kg and is about right for 4 people or larger families.

All boxes normally contain 3 types of fruit and 10 types of vegetables, with the prices include delivery. Boxes are delivered before 7AM, 6 days a week – the day is determined on which zone your address is located in.

Taste of Melbourne 2013

Taste of Melbourne

Disclosure: Alastair and I received entry courtesy of Taste of Melbourne and Hothouse Media. We purchased our own crowns.

Taste of Melbourne has returned for another year, and like last year it’s at Pelican Lawn in Albert Park Lake. Alastair and I headed down for a couple of hours tonight to check it out.

As for all previous Taste of Melbournes, you have to buy Crowns as your currency to spend at the event. $1 = 1 Crown. One thing is different this year – they’ve done away with the paper vouchers and you now get a rechargeable card. We found most places told us the balance remaining on our card whenever we bought something, which helped me keep track of how much we were spending.

Hannah

Coffee

Hannah is sweet.

This Hannah is probably the sweetest Hannah of all Hannahs in the entire world (sorry to all other Hannahs, it’s truth) but unfortunately she’s on the other side of the world. Much closer to me is cafe Hannah, located down the St Kilda end of Chapel Street. It’s not quite as sweet, but sweet enough.
