A day with the Samsung Galaxy A5
Disclosure: The Samsung Galaxy A5 was provided by Edelman Australia and Samsung.
Recently I took the fairly newly released Samsung Galaxy A5 out for a day. I had a wander around the city and met a friend for lunch and took the opportunity to trial the phone.
I love how much phone cameras have improved. They’ve gotten so much better that when we visited Nelson in January, I didn’t use my SLR at all – just my phone. Because I like to leave my SLR at home when I can e.g. during the day when there’s plenty of natural light, a good phone camera is really important to me.
How did the A5 do? All these photos (except for the ones of the actual phone, obviously) are straight from the Galaxy A5 and completely unedited, apart from cropping.
First of all I really liked the way the phone felt – it’s thin and light, being 6.7mm thick, and felt really nice in my hand. It’s about mid-size – not too small but not super large. The white colour is quite attractive too.
I must say that the screen resolution isn’t quite as good as my current phone. Also, kind of annoyingly, it uses a different sized sim (a nano-sim) – dear phone manufacturers, it would be GREAT if you could standardise sim card sizes.
But on to my day out with it. As mentioned, I met a friend for lunch.
We had a nice lunch, but I won’t talk about the food. Look at my photos instead.
I was pleasantly surprised when I transferred the photos to my computer because they look quite good on a proper screen.
Fun thing – there’s an animated gif mode. It snaps up to 20 continuous photos and automatically adds them together to create an animated gif. Here’s one I took while waiting for a tram. Southern Cross gif 😀
Alastair and I also tried out the different selfie modes – wide selfie, rear-cam selfie, beauty face features – but I’m not going to share those, so here’s a shot of Daiso instead, hah.

Looks pretty good! Especially considering there was no editing other cropping. I particularly like the picture of the salad!
