Cafe Vue at Heide: Picnic
I’ve been wanting to go to the Heide Museum of Modern Art for a while. Most people go to a gallery to see – oh I dunno – the art. That wasn’t my main incentive though.
Truthfully, I just wanted an excuse to buy a picnic hamper from Cafe Vue. This tells you my priorities: Food > Art.
Australia Day turned out to be the perfect occasion. My MIL and step-FIL were over, and the forecast was for a very hot and sunny day. Perfect for a picnic!
After a couple of hours looking around the Heide gallery (it was okay) we went into Cafe Vue and picked up our preordered picnic hamper. It came in a big basket, and we walked down to the gardens and found a nice tree to sit underneath.
Once our picnic blankets had been set up (I come prepared, yes), I pulled our feast out of the basket.
And lookie, what a feast it was. We had:
Three salads: one freekah salad, one green salad and a beetroot salad
Four rolls filled with smoked salmon
Two small rotisserie chickens
One large crusty baguette
A jar of guacamole
Cheese
A little box of desserts – chocolate mousse, mini cupcakes and chocolate mousse lamingtons
A thermos of mint tea
There was a lot of food, and it was all really good: excellent salads, particularly the beetroot one; soft smoked salmon rolls; juicy, tender chicken; crusty crusty baguette. This was a good picnic.
We had so much food that we ended up taking one of the chickens and the baguette home for dinner.
If you’re going to make a trip to the Heide Museum of Modern Art, it’s definitely worth ordering a picnic basket. Or if you’re not interested in the art, you can just hang out in the sculpture garden (which is free) with your picnic.
The hamper can be ordered through the Vue Shop. Try doing a search for “picnic” and you’ll see it. It needs at least 24 hours notice, and don’t forget to write in the notes the day and time you’ll be picking it up. The cost is $60 for two, or $110 for four.

Ohhh I’ve been meaning to try the picnic for ages! I’ve seen it so many times hehe but never had it before 🙂 I think the picnic food would be better than the actual food in the cafe 😛

Yes this was indeed a good picnic, and we really enjoyed all the food. The chicken was really good, and I even enjoyed the chocolate mousse, and I am not usually a chocolate mousse fan. Thanks again for a great picnic!! We really enjoyed the day.

That is insanely good! I’ve wanted to go for a while too, more for the food than the art. I must find someone to help share this epicness with!
