Mr Ed

Coffee

A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course,
That is of course, unless the horse,
Is the famous Mister Ed.

Does anyone else remember this show? And did anyone else ever want to now why Mister Ed talked? Or why he only talked to Wilbur? Did Mister Ed *really* speak or was Wilbur crazy? So many questions!

Fortunately Mr Ed the cafe doesn’t throw up quite so many questions. It’s a newish cafe on Racecourse Road, and must have opened in the past couple of months because I noticed it the other week when we drove past.

Lamington Chiffon Cake

Lamington Chiffon Cake

EVERYBODY.

I have an announcement to make.

I’m closing ‘off the spork’ and rebranding it to ‘chiffon the spork’.

That’s right. It’s going to be all chiffon all the time. I’m starting with this blog and then next – I’m going worldwide. Chiffons everywhere as far as the eye can see!

Smith and Daughters

Smith and Daughters

Disclosure: Alastair and I attended courtesy of Smith & Daughters.

Smith and Daughters is a new restaurant on Fitzroy Street, serving latin plant based food.

Plant based? Yes, it’s another way of saying that it’s a vegan restaurant, with no animal products used in any of the food or drinks.

The restaurant is near the Gertrude end of Fitzroy Street (the old Los Amates) and those who remember that restaurant will easily recognise the corner building. The interior has been brightened but the beautiful bluestone walls and the bar in the front corner have remained, with interesting artwork, neon signs, and knick knacks decorating the place.

Competition: King Island Dairy giveaway

King Island Dairy

Giveaway provided by King Island Dairy and F4 Consulting.

I don’t know if I’ve ever hosted a proper “dinner party”.

I have people over for dinner all the time. But it’s usually a casual affair: a text message or email invite, a jumble of food in the middle of the table, and paper serviettes.

And don’t get me wrong – casual is great. I love having people over and cooking and catching up. But there’s something really nice about the thought of a proper dinner party, and I do think sometimes that I should go to more effort.

King Island Dairy have launched an ebook on hosting a perfect dinner party: perfectdinnerparty.com.au. Along with tips on how to make one run smoothly, there’s also tips on putting together the perfect cheese plate.

Lime chiffon cake with lime curd and coconut custard *

Lime chiffon cake

It was Alastair’s birthday yesterday, and as per tradition, there was birthday lasagne.

Naturally, it’s not a real birthday unless there’s cake, so I asked him what he wanted.

“Chocolate?”

“What kind of chocolate? Chiffon? Mudcake? Flourless?”

“Ahh… how about chocolate beetroot?”

During the conversation, I agreed to chocolate beetroot and then later… totally disregarded his request. However, in my defense – actually, I have no defense. I just wanted to bake another chiffon cake. I don’t know why I bothered asking for his opinion.

Bowery to Williamsburg

Coffee

I keep wanting to call this cafe Bowery to Williamstown instead of Bowery to Willamsburg.

The real name is a homage to New York’s Bowery subway station, but I personally feel that the owners missed an opportunity to work in a reference to Melbourne. I’m sure that Willamsburg, New York is 100000% cooler than Williamstown, Melbourne, but so what? 🙂

Pear and maple syrup cake

Pear and maple syrup cake

Is there anyone out there who actually loves pears?

I always think of them as a very boring fruit. There’s a tiny window of ripeness where I think they’re okay, but they go soft and mushy so quickly.

I’ve been ordering fruit and veg boxes occasionally, and apart from the dreaded parsley (a bunch showed up in my last box) I’ve also been receiving pears.

Bread Machine Butter Bread *

Sandwich

Who owns a bread machine? Hands up please.

Who owns a bread machine that languishes in a cupboard, never used? Keep your hands up.

That was me, until recently. My bread machine sat in the bottom of my pantry for – I kid you not – at least five years, unused.

If you own a bread machine, you may know this story. I stopped using mine because it made terrible bread. Really terrible bread.

Prahran Market: Harvest the Sea and the Vine – MFWF

Wine

Disclosure: I attended courtesy of Prahran Market.

It’s that time of year again – yes, it’s March and the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival is back.

I don’t have much planned for this year’s festival for some reason. I had a bit going on when the program was released last year and just never got around to organising anything. And I must admit that the allure of staying home and doing absolutely nothing is having a very strong pull on me at the moment!

But last weekend, I left the house temporarily to go to Prahran Market to attend their Harvest the Sea and the Vine event.

Fig Clafoutis

Fig clafoutis

Fresh fig season is the best season (apart from summer, but we’re not counting that).

I’m really lucky that my friend’s mum has a large fig tree, and I’ve been reaping the bounty of their harvests.

That’s right – free figs all for meeeee. Alastair doesn’t really eat them, so I’ve been scoffing them down like crazy.
