Afternoon teas seem to be hot, hot, hot this year. They’ve always been around but lots of new ones seem to have been launched in the past six months.

While that’s been happening, the classics keep chugging along.

For example: The Langham. They have been holding their Chocolate Bar afternoon tea in the Aria Bar for many years now. The last time I visited was a couple of years ago, and since then there’s been a change in head pastry chef, who has revamped all the chocolate treats to be a bit more modern.

Bursaria: A Touch Of…. High Tea

I seem to be going to a few afternoon teas lately – and I am certainly not complaining! It’s such a lovely thing to do – sip tea or coffee while nibbling little morsels of food. I love it.

One of the ones I attended lately was by Bursaria at the Abbotsford Convent. Bursaria are holding a series of high teas on the third Sunday of each month (until September) in the Rosina function space for $55 per person.

Speigeltent: Jazz High Tea

Speigeltents were originally constructed in the late 19th century as mobile dance halls. And if you spend any time around the Arts Centre, you’ll see that one shows up in Melbourne between February – April, hosting a varied program of events. This one is the Famous Speigeltent, originally built in 1920 in Belgium, and it’s transported from venue to venue and constructed on site.

The Langham: Chocolate High Tea at the Aria Bar

Last month I was invited to a food and fashion bloggers’ chocolate morning tea at the Langham, organised by Nuffnang. I don’t normally stuff myself with cakes and chocolates for breakfast – but you know what they say about not turning down an opportunity.

When I arrived, I walked past this table and thought, “Ooooooh is that for us?” And what do you know – it was! We were introduced to the German pastry chef, Chef Markus Bohm, who talked us through the various treats on offer. All of the items used a different type of single origin chocolate (apart from the Lindt and Callebaut) with the cocoas from places like Yucatan, Costa Rica and Madagascar. We’ll take a closer look in a moment.

Mossgreen Tearooms

So 2013 seemed to be the year of high/afternoon tea for me, blogging oh 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (!) plus a bonus high coffee. And here’s another one I went to before the year finished: afternoon tea at Mossgreen Tearooms.

Mossgreen Tearooms is next door to the Mossgreen auction house and gallery on High Street in Armadale. The Tearooms are in a large, white, split-level room with large windows at the front that let in plenty of light.

InterContinental The Rialto: High Coffee

I’m sure there are Melburnians out there who don’t like coffee.

Not that I know of very many. They are a rare breed.

So it’s a surprise that no one else has done this yet. Instead of having a normal afternoon/high tea – replace the tea with coffee. Brilliant. High Coffee was born.

I was invited to experience it a couple of weeks ago and trotted along to the InterContinental Rialto one Sunday afternoon with Alastair.

Collins Kitchen, Grand Hyatt: afternoon tea

Note: this is a scheduled post while I’m on holiday. But I’m back really, really soon!

My gorgeous friend Hazzie is getting married this week. 🙂 I’m REALLY sad that I’ll be missing her big day, but I have no doubt that it’ll be all things wonderful.

Before I went away, Shellie roped “the gang” (me, Taz, April and Kat) into a surprise bridal afternoon tea for our dear friend. I lied to Hazzie to get her to the venue by telling her I needed a lunch companion as Alastair was busy. Sneaky alert!

The six of us message each other every day, so it was really difficult to keep quiet about it – I think we only managed to keep it a secret by barely talking to one another leading up to the day.

Shellie did the set up and did an amazing job – she made sugar cookies and even put together show bags for us – check out her post. She had even thought of a hashtag #hazhightea 🙂

The Langham Aria Bar: Burch and Purchese afternoon tea

The other week I was invited to attend the launch of the Burch and Purchese afternoon tea at The Langham. It’s a limited series of afternoon teas starting in April – replacing the chocolate bar at the Aria Bar (which I have also attended previously), cakes and treats will instead be created by Darren Purchese from Burch and Purchese Sweet Studio in South Yarra.

If you’ve visited the B&P Sweet Studio, you’ll know that it’s like a crazy science lab for sweet things, so I was eager to see whether some of those whimsical and interesting flavour combinations would be brought across to The Langham.

I made a big order on Amazon over Easter, picking up cookbooks and food books that had been on my wish list for a while. The free shipping and insanely high Australian dollar was just too tempting to pass up! 😀 On Friday, the last of my order arrived, and one of the books I received was Ottolenghi, the cookbook.

I only had a quick flick through the cookbook, but the photos of teacakes caught my eye almost immediately. There were three recipes for teacakes, and with one of them being lemon and blueberry, I decided to bake them this weekend to tick off my Cookbook Challenge for the fortnight.
