8bit
8bit is the latest (only?) gourmet burger joint in Footscray, and in the few short months since it’s been open it’s already received a lot of attention online. The place is themed around old school video games (hence 8bit), with the decor similarly inspired, a playable arcade machine inside, and all the burgers and hot dogs named after various titles from what some would say is the golden age of video gaming. There’s nothing like a bit of nostalgia, hey? π
Alastair and I stopped by for lunch one weekend and they were doing a roaring trade, with plenty of people waiting for takeaway. They were pretty busy but we didn’t have a problem finding a seat inside, with customers eating and moving on pretty quickly.
As mentioned, 8bit is about burgers and hot dogs, but the emphasis seems to be more on the burgers. Prices of burgers range from $8.50 – $13.50, which is fairly standard nowadays.
Alastair had an Altered Beast, which came with a beef patty, bacon, cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, 8bit sauce and BBQ sauce ($9.50).
My choice was the After Burner, which had a beef patty, tomato, red onion, lettuce, cheese, chilli sauce, jalapenos, and chipotle mayo ($9.50). It was a bit messy to eat with all the sauce, and tastewise was between an old fashioned takeaway joint burger and something more gourmet. I liked it.
We shared a small serve of onion rings ($3 for small, $5 for large). These had been coated in a beer batter and while they were nicely crispy and the batter was good, there was too much batter for my liking.
We shared a small serve of beer battered fries ($3 for small, $5 for large).
If fries aren’t enough for you, there is a loaded option ($8) that comes loaded with toppings: chilli beef, cheese sauce, bacon, pickle relish, grilled onions and jalapenos.
8bit also sell milkshakes to wash down all the grease. I ordered us a peanut butter milkshake ($6.50) which was particularly excellent and even had pretzels in the mix.
So is 8bit a good addition to Footscray? It’s a yes from me.

8Bit is on my list of places to visit, like Daisy, it is also on the other side of town for me, but I will definitely get there soon enough. Starting the blog that I have, I think it is necessary to make the trip, what are your thoughts out of 10 on these burgers?
