St Kilda Dispensary

St Kilda Dispensary

St Kilda Dispensary is a sweet cafe on Brighton Road – near the corner of St Kilda Road and Carlisle Street. The name is a reference to the original usage of the building, which was – surprise surprise – a dispensary. The cafe runs over two rooms, and while small it’s really cute inside, with a colour scheme of white and green, and decorated with lots of vintage pharmaceutical and medical items.

Just what the doctor ordered

Their kitchen is small, and for lunch the options are mostly sandwich type things while for breakfast, there’s items like corn fritters, porridge or their version of the ubiquitous cafe classic smashed avocado.

Meatball panini

I’ve visited twice, and the first time I had a meatball panini – meatballs in napoli sauce, with basil and parmesan cheese ($12.50). Simple but good.

New Yorker

And the second time my lunch was the New Yorker – a toasted seeded sandwich with pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and mustard mayo ($12.50). It came complete with a big skewered pickle.

It was a really good sandwich, particularly with the melted cheese and the sour / salty sauerkraut.

Also the pickle, because, pickle.

Coffee

My long blacks have been good.

St Kilda Dispensary

I could end this post with some terrible medical / pharmaceutical pun but I am going to resist (and you are going to be proud of me), so I’ll just say that St Kilda Dispensary is a charming cafe with food that’s reasonably priced and satisfying (and sometimes comes with pickles).
