Hannah
Hannah is sweet.
This Hannah is probably the sweetest Hannah of all Hannahs in the entire world (sorry to all other Hannahs, it’s truth) but unfortunately she’s on the other side of the world. Much closer to me is cafe Hannah, located down the St Kilda end of Chapel Street. It’s not quite as sweet, but sweet enough.
Inside, the cafe is kitted out in mostly black and white – a black ceiling broken up by big white round lightshades and black topped tables with blonde wood chairs. Two sides of the cafe are made up of floor to ceiling windows.
The menu is not extensive but there’s some interesting breakfast and lunch choices.
One good option for lunch is a rather good steak sandwich – scotch fillet steak with watercress, onion jam, beetroot remoulade and cheddar on sourdough toast ($16.50). The bread can be slightly on the too toasted side but otherwise it’s rather enjoyable – I particularly love the thick slice of cheese and the beetroot remoulade.
I’ve been to Hannah on several different occasions, and one time I tried their version of baked beans: Saint beans – red, white and black beans with ham hock, pomegranate molasses, feta pangrattato with rye sourdough toast ($17, vege version $15).
It may look like a small serve but it’s quite hearty with the beans, large pieces of shredded ham hock and the breadcrumb topping – I was full afterwards.
And on a different different occasion, I had pasta – tagliatelle with chicken, lemon, chilli, iceberg and cashews ($18). Very lemony and a very “homely” dish.
Hannah has different specials each day. My friend MC had a rather good looking pork sandwich one time we were there. I kind of wished I had ordered this – look at that cheese…
I’d like to see their menu expanded a bit more and some work done on the ventilation (it’s occasionally a bit cooking fume smokey) but I’ve enjoyed my visits there so far. I hope they do well.

I miss you BFF. Thank you. I woke up to a Sad Day today and your words just made the sun shine in my heart.
I wish I could teleport to the other side of the world this instant and ask you to take me to this cafe for lunch… and then to several other Melbourne places for multiple desserts because I’d have to make the most of my BFF/Melbourne/Southern Hemisphere time before teleporting back here in time for my trivia adventure tonight and work tomorrow. xoxo
