Proud Mary
Proud Mary has been around for a while, and from the beginning it’s been hot.
And on a particularly hot Friday temperature wise, I was there for breakfast with my friend Em (Random Friday Off Work – huzzah). It was our second attempt for Random Friday Off Work breakfast there – our first attempt was derailed by Em’s toddler being sick and having to tag along. Proud Mary was a bit too busy for a little kidlet with lots of energy, so we headed somewhere a bit quieter.
Our second attempt was more successful and we were seated at one of the large communal tables without having to wait.
After a quick look through the menu (brief but with many tempting sounding options) I ordered the roasted mushrooms ($16.50) – large slices of mushrooms topped with chipotle butter, served on a thick slice of brioche with whipped goats cheese and a poached egg.
Yeah. Look at that butter. Pretty damn good.
Em had the ricotta hotcakes ($16.50) with caramelised peach, toasted pistachio and rose marscarpone. Holy moly, this is an epic dish. Not only is it rich and sweet, but the serving size was Out Of Control, with Em receiving three massive, thick hotcakes. I suggest sharing this! She *barely* made it through half.
The food was good, but unfortunately service was kinda… not so good. After eating, we were busy chatting and decided we would order another round of coffees. But somehow we sunk into the Invisible Zone. We literally sat there for at least twenty minutes, occasionally trying to catch someone’s eye. Yes, they were busy but not absolutely packed. Ho hum, never mind. (We did manage to get another coffee in the end.)
I liked the food at Proud Mary but it seems to be a very busy place. I didn’t love it enough to be prepared to deal with that when there’s a zillion other good cafes in Melbourne. I definitely would have no problems heading back, but it wouldn’t be top of my list.

It makes me feel excited in my heart when you (and others) blog about places I’ve actually been to. It makes me feel more positive about eventually returning.

As with any time that Patricia’s were using Proud Mary beans, I now have Creedence stuck in my head … not that that’s a bad thing, probably just shows my age a bit 🙂 How annoying is the Invisible Zone?! Glad to hear you got your coffee in the end.

Oh I love the blue cup in the first shots, so cute. The pancakes look so delicious, I will have to try rose water with my mascarpone. It sounds delicious.
