STREAT

Streat is great. Here’s four reasons why:
1: Chipotle spiced beans with pork belly. For breakfast.
2: It’s a social enterprise and assists homeless youth with hospitality training.
3: They have a breakfast called Dogs breakfast that has hushpuppies. CUTE.
4: See reason 1 again (it deserves to be noted twice).
Streat, in Flemington, used to be Social Roasting Company but changed over sometime this year. While the food at SRC was fine, I think that the food has gotten much better since Streat took over. They have an all day brunch menu that spans the usual egg options, to corned beef with cauliflower cheese croquettes, to a pulled pork sandwich with coriander cumin salt fries.
Alastair and I stopped by for breakfast one Sunday. The decor inside is nothing to write home about but it’s comfy – the wall behind the counter is painted with blackboard paint with the menu written up in chalk, and there’s a cabinet holding baked goods. In one corner there’s a coffee roasting machine.
Alastair had the “Dogs Breakfast” – spring onion and cheddar hushpuppies, refried black beans, poached eggs, and a salsa duo ($15.50). He proclaimed it yum++.
While I had the previously mentioned Chipotle spiced beans with salsa verde, sour cream and Turkish bread with coriander pork belly ($16). What can I say? Delicious. The kidney beans were in a flavoursome tomato sauce and were tender but not too soft. The Turkish bread had a ridiculous amount of butter on it, which is always a plus in my book. And the pork belly – well, it appeared to have been double cooked – possibly braised until tender and then deep fried briefly to crisp up the edges. All good things.
There’s definitely more than four reasons why Streat is fab. Can you read the sign? That’s at least 25 reasons there. Have you visited? What are your reasons? π

STREAT is a fantastic social enterprise, run by passionate people who believe in the work they’re doing. I was fortunate enough to learn quite a lot about them at my most recent job. I always make a point to stop by their cart in Melbourne Central when I hop off the train. Good stuff!
