International Cake Pop Incident Party
Time for another IIP party, and this month the theme is cake pops. Our host, Penny, also has her birthday this month – happy birthday dear! ๐
I have a bit of a sad tale to tell. I tried making cake pops and failed! Buh bow! And with no time to do redo them, I figured I may as well show that it’s not always success, cupcakes and fairy floss in my kitchen!
I think it just wasn’t meant to be. First, I couldn’t find lollipop sticks – I went to four different shops and couldn’t track any down, so I settled on popsicle sticks. Then, I had a BRILLIANT idea. I thought I’d make cake popsicles (since I had the sticks!) and thought that I might be able to make cheesecake popsicles. Except… they didn’t harden enough to be able to pull them out of the molds. ๐ I had increased the amount of gelatine in the cheesecake, but obviously didn’t add enough. I tried freezing them, but I was on a limited time schedule and after several hours when they still hadn’t frozen I went to Plan B.
Plan B was freezer cake. Since I didn’t have enough time to bake a cake and let it cool, I decided to use some cupcakes and frosting I had stashed in the freezer. Such a fantastic idea! I defrosted the cakes and frosting, and mixed them together before forming them into balls.
Then I dipped the popsicle sticks into melted chocolate and inserted them into the balls. They were looking good at this stage. I managed to successfully dip one of them into melted chocolate and coat it in crushed biscuits.
Sadly, it was all downhill from there. That one lonely cake pop was my only successful one.
Perhaps my balls were too large and heavy, because I couldn’t get them to stay on the sticks! Look at this sad character – can you hear his cry for help?
I gave up, but I’m sure that the other participants were far more successful in their cake pop attempts! Check them out below, or go to the IIP forum for a round up.

I’m sorry that your cake pops didn’t come out:(. The idea was good though with the cheesecake popsicles. The one that came out looks good, maybe with more time and more experimentation it can work out ๐

I bought popsicle sticks too, but my cake pops were too large and heavy so ended up using wooden chopsticks! There’s a lot of fridge time and waiting time involved in this process, as we found out. Kudos for managing to take the one lovely shot of the cake pop that survived!

Oh BFF, if only I could’ve been there to help you clean (read: eat) up all the scraps that refused to behave for you! The cheesecake idea sounds particularly brilliant. Good on you for trying the experiment!

Oh dear oh dear I can hear the sad character’s cries echoing in my mind! His mournful sobs, lamenting the demise of his friends ๐
I love the story you paint for us, and I love that freezer cake came to the rescue.
So unfair that your brilliant ideas didn’t quite work but you surely got some awesome photos from the experience ๐

I can hear the poor little things lament for help! These cake pops are much harder to make than they look!!!

hi hunnie… I had the same issues with mine. So did ok and some fell part when I use the stick! Especially after coating, it just got too heavy. What anncoo did was to dip the stick into chocolate and then stick it. And then freeze so it acted as a glue. Clever. Will have to try it out the next time. Thanks for trying…. im sure it still tasted yummo!

Well props to you for trying and for posting anyway. In any case, I am sure the birthday girl would be happy to eat the remains of your “sad creatures” (I personally think they look yummy). Seems these little devils gave us all some trouble one way or the other!

I have wanted to try these for a long time. I am sorry yours didn’t work out, but nice to see you show how & why. Isn’t that how we all learn? (The photos were terrific anyway!)

What a great flavor idea! Props to you for trying these out and posting your experience. From the looks of it, there might not have been enough frosting to make the balls stick together and to the stick. Hope you try again sometime ๐

Stuff happens my dear! As long as you can laugh about it –that’s all that matters!

Sorry to hear about the mishap in your kitchen. I heard about how time-consuming, and hard it is to make the lovely cake pops. The cheesecake idea sounds good though. I’m sure it’ll work if you continue to play around with the recipe:)
I think freezing the cake pop before coating it does seem to help. Here’s some instructions by Bakerella. I chanced upon it some time back while ‘researching’ on cake pops.

Oh dear!! Nevermind, I had a bit of cake pop fail on my one and only attempt. I am not going to let them beat me, we may have to have remedial IPP-cake pops. I didn’t freeze my balls before dipping ๐

It’s all about the taste mama. Don’t worry, I’m always here to act as a dessert vacum. Just don’t call me Hoover! hehe

Oh no! But I do like the look of your successful cake-pop – looks like a Golden Gaytime ice-cream =D

Oh no, but as long as they tasted good then that’s the main thing!
